    Frequently Asked Medicare Questions

You can enroll in Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period, which begins 3 months before your 65th birthday month and ends 3 months after. You may also qualify for Special Enrollment Periods based on certain life events, or you can enroll during the General Enrollment Period (January 1-March 31) each year.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) replaces Original Medicare with a private plan that provides all your Part A and B benefits, usually includes Part D, and often offers extra benefits. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare to cover costs like deductibles and coinsurance, but requires a separate Part D plan for prescription coverage.

If you're 65+ and covered by a group health plan through your or your spouse's current employment, you may be able to delay Medicare enrollment without penalty. However, this depends on the size of the employer. We recommend speaking with one of our advisors to understand your specific situation.

Medicare costs vary based on the coverage you choose. Most people get Part A premium-free. Part B has a standard monthly premium ($174.70 in 2024 for most people). Medicare Advantage plans often have low or $0 premiums but include copays and coinsurance. Medicare Supplement plans have monthly premiums that vary by plan type, age, location, and carrier.

Medicare Part D plans cover prescription medications, but each plan has its own formulary (list of covered drugs). Our advisors can help you find a plan that covers your specific medications at the lowest cost.
